Big Bottles, More Joy: Tips for Serving and Enjoying Large Format Wines

At Rombauer, we believe the best moments are those that become more joyful when shared. That’s why we have a special fondness for large format bottles — magnums, double magnums, and beyond. Opening grand bottles multiplies not only the wine; it amplifies the connection. If you’ve ever wondered how to bring a big bottle to life at your next celebration, we’re here to guide you, step by step.

How Much Joy Is in a Big Bottle? (A Pour Guide)

Large format bottles aren’t just eye-catching — they’re wonderfully practical, too. Ever wondered how many glasses you’ll get from each size? Here’s a handy guide for planning your next joyful gathering:

  • Magnum (1.5L): The crowd-pleaser. Holds the equivalent of two standard bottles: about 10-12 glasses of wine.
  • Double Magnum / Jeroboam (3L): Ready for a feast. Pours like four bottles, or 20-24 glasses.
  • Imperial (6L): A true showstopper. Holds eight bottles, or roughly 40-48 glasses: enough to keep everyone’s glass full, from first toast to hugs goodbye.

Chilling: Get Schooled on the Cool

The only thing better than a big bottle is a perfectly chilled big bottle. With the sheer volume that large formats hold, they take longer to chill than a standard 750ml, so plan ahead:

  • Start Early: Place your bottle in the fridge a full day before your gathering. No room in the fridge? Submerge your bottle in a sturdy cooler or a sink filled with half ice and half water at least three hours before drinking.
  • Rule of Numb: Chill whites for at least 3–4 hours. Reds benefit from a gentle cool-down — maybe an hour in the fridge or 20 minutes in an ice bath. Think proper cellar temperature for optimal enjoyment.

Serving: A Little Theatrics, a Lot of Joy

Pouring from a magnum or larger takes a touch of panache — and perhaps a little teamwork. Here’s how to serve with grace:

  • Knife Skills: Use the knife of a wine opener to crack and peel the wax off.
  • Enlist a Friend: Magnums are fairly easy to pour as usual. However, you should cradle double magnums or bigger with two hands, and have a friend steady the glasses.
  • Just Breathe: Whether well-aged or young, large formats love a moment to breathe. Consider opening the bottle a half hour or so before pouring — or simply let the wine open up in the glass as you swirl.

The Memory Maker

A big bottle is more than wine; it’s an invitation to pour another glass, tell another story, make another toast. Some of our favorite memories started with a magnum on the table —birthdays, anniversaries, backyard barbecues, or sometimes just an ordinary Tuesday when all of your favorite people have the chance to get together.

  • Start a Tradition: Big bottles make milestones even more memorable. Invite friends to sign the empty bottle as a keepsake or tuck it away to mark a future occasion.
Fun fact: Bring us your empty large format bottle, and we’ll happily reseal it for you. You can have your wine and a beautiful memento, too
  • Pair with Feasts: Large formats shine alongside a communal main course like a side of salmon, holiday ham, prime rib, or roast chicken. There’s something truly unifying about sharing from the same grand dish and the same grand bottle.
  • Capture the Moment: Don’t forget the pics. Capture everyone’s expressions when the bottle is revealed, the cork is popped, and the glasses are raised. Most importantly, tag @rombauervineyards on Instagram in your photos! We love to see your JOYful Moments.
