This limited-production Zinfandel is produced only in exceptional vintages and represents the year’s finest barrels. 2016 marks the second vintage made since 2011. This wine is grown in two premier vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, where the soils, complex topography and high elevation are ideal for Zinfandel.
This wine is made from fruit grown in Rombauer's prized El Dorado Vineyard, which sits 1,650 feet above sea level in El Dorado County, and Dillian Vineyard in the cooler Shenandoah Valley region of Amador County, which features head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel. Both sites produce wines with dense flavors and layers of complexity.
A cool spell in August stalled harvest a bit at the outset, but a warm September brought a mad dash to the finish. All in all, 2016 was another high-quality vintage despite small volumes for some varietals due to cool, rainy weather at flowering. Sustainable farming practices were tailored to each block with the assistance of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) techonology. All fruit was hand-picked at night and sorted in the vineyard, then transported by refrigerated trucks to our winery in Napa Valley.
The grapes were carefully destemmed and optically sorted to ensure only perfect fruit made it into the wine. A cold soak extracted color and flavor before primary fermentation began in tank. The wine was gently basket-pressed, then racked to oak barrels to finish primary fermentation, malolactic fermentation and aging. Production was limited to 690 cases.
Dark purple with magenta highlights and a bright ruby rim, this Zinfandel is intensely aromatic with scents of red cherries, plums, ripe boysenberry, vanilla and violets. Flavors of black and red cherries, blackberry jam and red currant create a voluptuous core, complemented by lively acidity and soft tannins. Nuances of fig, vanilla and baking spice invite another taste.
