This single-vineyard designate displays the unique character of the Rombauer family’s Buchli Station Vineyard in the Carneros region. Of our Chardonnay vineyards, this site sits closest to San Pablo Bay and its salt plains, which may explain the wine’s minerality and briny character.
The fruit for this wine comes from prized blocks in our Buchli Station Vineyard on the Napa Valley side of the cool, windy Carneros region. The vines' roots struggle in the shallow clay soils, yielding small, concentrated clusters. The vineyard is Napa Green/Fish Friendly Certified.
A wet winter with moderate rainfall, a mild spring and a warm summer created the ideal growing season. Very warm weather at the beginning of harvest accelerated the need to pick Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in early September. Sustainable farming practices throughout the growing season were tailored to each block with the assistance of aerial photos produced using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) technology. The fruit was hand-picked at dawn and sorted in the vineyard.
The grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed while the fruit was still cool. The juice was pumped to tank to cold-settle overnight before it was racked to barrel for primary and malolactic fermentation. The lees were stirred every two weeks to give the wine rich flavors and a creamy texture. Each barrel was hand-selected for this wine. Production was limited to 250 Cases.
Upon release, the wine is pale straw, but the color will deepen with age. Aromas of Meyer lemon, mango, ripe honeycrisp apples and a hint of minerality greet the nose. Citrus, mango, nectarine and peach mark the palate, along with white florals and vanilla. The finish is deliciously long with a creamy mouthfeel.
